Bar Sophia is a Melburnian take on a modern Athenian taverna. It’s a moody neighbourhood restaurant that complements the largely Italian dining strip and joins Melbourne’s new Greek wave. In the 45-seat dining room and 12-seat front bar, you’ll find modern, refined Greek plates and contemporary wines to match.

Through an open window into the kitchen you can see the chefs at work on the woodfired oven that gives the restaurant its identity. The menu starts with house-made flatbread topped with goat’s cheese alongside small plates like scallops and pork-neck skewers. Larger dishes lean into proteins. You might find flounder with Urfa butter, Loddon Valley spatchcock, or orzo with Moreton Bay bug, saffron and leek.

The wine list highlights Greece, Sicily and Georgia, with some small Aussie producers included. Expect to hear funk, Italo disco and, of course, some Greek classics spinning on the record player.
